A ride

Results are out!! Resa didn’t pass. “Just a hopeless failure”, she says to herself as she exhales the smoke out of her mouth. She can’t help but think about the result. How is she going to tell her dad about the result?

A few years ago, she had a huge argument with her dad on the dining table. He accused her of having too much fun and not being serious about her studies. She was good at her studies and got highest marks in a few subjects in her grade as well. She was mad at him for not appreciating her. What more does he want from her? Does she need to bury her face in her books all the time? Her dad was still scolding her. Remembering how her dad never let her do the things she loved doing, her rage got out of control. She took her plate full of dinner in her hands and threw at her dad and shouted, “My scores are just FINE... Let me handle my life in my way!”

Well, her scores are not fine now. She feels so much stupider than how she used to be. She was basically a nerd when she was younger. Now, she isn't even good at it. She feels like there is nothing, that she can excel in, anymore. “Just a hopeless failure”, she says under her breath to express her resentment towards herself.

She turns her eyes up towards the sky to see the shining stars in the dark night sky. None, she could see. She looks down in dismay. She feels a sudden outburst of emotions, she has been suppressing. The disappearance of the stars was the final straw. She lost hope in everything. She doesn’t know what to do anymore. She turns her head around as she hears a sound behind her. There stood a black silhouette in front of the bright light of the electric bulb. The silhouette points below. The cigarette held by her fingers falls down as Resa looks below. She is amazed to see all the stars lying on the ground instead of the sky. They were lights from houses, scattered all over the place, twinkling like bright little stars.

The silhouette steps forward towards her right. “I’m Sera”, says the girl in the silhouette, as she moves her hand forward for a handshake. “I am re.. Resa”, she hesitantly introduces herself. They went down to the street and sat on a bench. They were both looking at the blank sky. Resa’s eyes glided from the sky to Sera’s eyes. Despite the absence of the stars above them, her eyes had spark in them that captivated Resa’s heart. Under the light of the streetlamp, they noticed how much alike they looked. The difference could only be noticed when they laughed, and by the way Sera’s nose crinkled when she smiled.

They became best friends pretty quickly. This was an astonishing thing for a girl like Resa. It has already been a whole year since she started going to her new college. Yet, she has no friends. She’s feels awkward talking to new faces. She stays at one corner of her class, studying everyone else. She feels invisible to everyone. Only friend she has is an old buddy from her childhood who now lives far away. She used to sob at her room every now and then. She tries to be social but she can’t.

Resa and Sera hit it off pretty well. Sometimes, they would gaze at the stars together. They were so similar yet there had many differences. Sometimes, they would take random turns at places, they weren’t familiar with, and get lost together. Sera loved the thrill of getting lost and finding her way again. This would freak out Resa. Every time they get lost, Sera would say,” I know this road. Don’t worry so much” and make fun of her. Later when Resa would find out that they were lost, she would be furious but she couldn’t stay mad at Sera for a long time. Sera taught Resa how to smile. Resa was happy again. Her family were amazed to see the lost smile upon her face once again. She wouldn’t snap at her family like before.

Every good thing has an end. Sera was moving away soon. To the moon, she would say. Resa is sad but she has now learnt tricks to stay happy. She skipped her classes to spend time with Sera. They talked all day long, walking on the streets throughout the city. They talked whole night long. The days passed by, in a blink of an eye.

Resa woke up on Sera’s last day, with tears in her eyes. She didn’t like goodbyes. She sat on her bed thinking about the past few months spent with her friend. The best months of her life!! She gathered herself up. It was time. The two friends hugged each other tight. Resa withdrew her body away from Sera to take a look at her friend for the last time. Sera leaned forward, looked at Resa. Then their lips met. Sera disappeared. Resa rubbed her eyes and found a mirror in front of her, instead of her identical friend Sera.
